Actor, compositor de canciones, comediógrafo y productor estadounidense. Cohan junto con sus padres y su hermana fueron artistas de vodevil bajo el nombre The Four Cohans. Empezó a escribir para los escenarios de Nueva York a principios de la década de 1900. Su musical Little Johnny Jones (1904; película, 1930) incluyó los clásicos "Give My Regards to Broadway y "Yankee Doodle Dandy. Entre sus posteriores producciones figuran The Governor's Son (1901), The Talk of New York (1907), Broadway Jones (1912), Seven Keys to Baldpate (1913) y American Born (1925). Posteriormente, apareció en espectáculos como Ah, Wilderness! (1933) y I'd Rather Be Right (1937). Sus canciones más conocidas son "You're a Grand Old Flag, "Mary's a Grand Old Name y la famosa canción de reclutamiento de la primera guerra mundial "Over There, por la que fue galardonado con una medalla especial del congreso en 1940. La película Yanki Dandy (1942) y el musical George M! (1968) se inspiraron en Cohan.
